Beginning in the 1890’s Birmingham’s twelve block Theater District thrived for over fifty years and accommodated more than seventy theaters and playhouses. The largest of these being the Alabama Theater, which seats 2500 people.
Built by Paramount Studios in 1927 as a showcase for their films, this Movie Palace was famous for featuring its Wurlitzer organ. The organ was required for musical accompaniment since the films were silent. There were only 17 Crawford Special-Publix One Mighty Wurlitzers ever made, and the one located inside of the Alabama is one of only three, which is still installed in the original site.
