Oak Mountain in the Autumn

Oak Mountain Lake

Oak Mountain Lake

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been going through some of my past images. Today I’m sharing several images that were taken last year at Oak Mountain State Park located in Pelham, Alabama. The 9,940 acre park is the largest park in the state.  The colors around the lake makes Autumn one of the most beautiful season of all to visit the area.

I had come across someone who was reproducing the Orton Effect using Photoshop. So I used the process on several of these images. It gives it a very unique looking appearance.

The technique was originally invented by Michael Orton.  He would take several identical images using slide film with different exposures and overlay them. One image would be out of focus or blurred while the other would be sharp. He even played with substituting one of the images with a texture layer, or combining a multicolored image and a monotone image. It sounds a lot like a manual version of Photoshop and a touch of HDR. Just when you think that you have come across something new, you learn that someone has already been there and done that.

Several months later, on a cold and cloudy day, I visited the park again. Now I know that some of you live north of here. Why I’ll never understand but that’s your choice. Haven’t you figured out yet that it get cold up there? However, for this guy, who grew up in the south and hates to be cold, this day was cold. OK there was ice on the edges of the lake, and my aluminum tripod was freezing.

Sunrise

Sunrise

Seriously, I arrived early and was able to shoot this beautiful sunrise as the sun rose right into the clouds. That’s right I got one picture and it was over. The light left as quickly as it arrived.  However, it was worth it because this has become one of my favorite pictures, and we now have it hanging in our home.

Thanks Rob. It was a really short one. It stayed behind the clouds for the rest of the morning.

Lovely colors. With nothing like that here in the desert, I am really enjoying seeing everyone else’s.

Thanks Scott for the comment. I love living here in Alabama. It is one of the most beautiful places around, and its home. However, I’ve visited my sister who lives in Arizona several times and have just fallen in love with the desert. Of course you may not have the autumn colors, but it is so beautiful, and you are able to see for miles.
